Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
