The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster final round of play.
Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
Rai entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.
Play-Off Decider
This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.
