Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial candidates in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
Pereira was sacked on the weekend after the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the team - are among the names to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the former Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they start the process of hiring a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise candidate, even though he would be a shock appointment given he was released by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham player is out of work which means the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
