Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.
Summers stated in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and look forward tracking their advancement".
Summers, who previously presided over the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed emails showed that Summers corresponded with the financier until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it respected the economist's decision to depart.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the directors," the company stated.
Legislative Background
This news arrives after the two houses of the US legislature voted on recently to approve a legislation that would require the US justice department to release its records on the case.
The legislation will afterward move to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has stated he plans to endorse the measure, after reversing his position on the issue following objections from his supporters.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-related messages made public by the Congressional committee last week included numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The emails indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to introduce Summers to influential world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the wider community, he stated he took "full responsibility for my poor judgment to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to rebuild faith and mend relationships with the people closest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public commitments earlier on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in DC where Summers was a prominent member, announced that Summers was no longer associated with the institution.
Summers became part of the leadership of the AI company, which develops the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
