A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.

The winning offer for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which operates locations across the country and abroad.

"The first tuna signals a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable participant at the traditional first sale.

Referred to as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is famous for submitting high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the winner told reporters that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," stating, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price soared in no time."

This most recent purchase exceeds his previous notable purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally known for sky-high prices. Last year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Swift Service

The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the winner's sushi chains shortly after the auction concluded.

"I sense like I've started the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so auspicious as the year starts," remarked one satisfied diner.
