A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
